Russell Westbrook had 32 points, 12 rebounds and took over late to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 103-97 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.
Westbrook scored the decisive points on opening night for the Thunder in their first game since franchise star Kevin Durant left in free agency and signed with the Golden State Warriors.
The game was tight up until the final minutes. With 6:17 remaining the Sixers pulled ahead 87-81 on a three-pointer from Robert Covington, which looked then to put the Thunder in a bad spot before a rough crowd.
However, Victor Oladipo, who had been having a tough game shooting (at the time 2-for-12 from the field), stepped up for a rebound and hit a jumper and following up with another score at the rim to trim it to a one-possession game.
“He really deeply cares and holds himself to a very high standard,” Donovan said of Oladipo. “His greatest strength is his motor and defensively ability. Regardless of what’s going on offensively, he has to stay with the defense.”
Donovan played Oladipo, Westbrook, Steven Adams, Enes Kanter and Andre Roberson in the final three minutes. That combination stymied the 76ers at the close, outscoring Philadelphia 11-2 in the final three minutes. Westbrook finished with 32 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists, and scored nine out of 12 Thunder points in the final minutes to help the Thunder take a 99-97 lead with 35 seconds to go.
“It’s just taking my time, being patient, poised and managing the game,” Westbrook said.
